A New Year!
Okay, so I didn’t post when I said I was going to… but it’s with good reason! Well… sorta
I had to do some planning for a very special event! *teehee*
So where were we? Yes, that’s right… New Year’s Eve.
This was the first time that I wasn’t really excited about New Year’s Eve. Usually I’d have gone shopping for a dress and shoes, done at least two weeks worth of planning to make sure I had the right outfit, the right hair and the right make-up for the night’s festivities. But for the very first time, I had NO PLANS. I didn’t care to party or dress up, or see anyone. My only stipulation was that at midnight, Kurt and I be together. There was no place that I had to be, except with him.
Call me superstitious, but I firmly believe that how you spend New Year’s Eve is a sort of revelation of what your year will look like, since in my opinion you carry over ‘what’s with you’ into the new year. All I wanted to carry over with me, was happiness and the start of this new chapter in my life.
He complied with my wishes and decided that we would hang out together and perhaps watch a movie if I were feeling up to it. I really should have become suspicious when his mum invited me to have my nails done. I NEVER do my nails! And his sisters took me to get a new hair cut.
New Year’s Eve he told me we might stop by a party that his cousin was deejaying at, so maybe I could wear a dress. I decided, “what the heck”, and went all out, wearing a silver sequinned number that I’ll never have the right occasion to wear. I figured, why not draw attention to myself, after all, it IS a ‘special occasion’.
This is how the rest of the evening went…
Me: Where are we going? We’ve passed a million movie theatres? Aren’t we going to the movies?
Him: Yea, but I’m hungry. We’re gonna go get something to eat first.
Me: Where are we eating?
Him: Just this little spot I know Downtown
We’re driving along and he stops the car and gets out. I’m so confused because we’re practically in the middle of the road! The valet opens my door and helps me out of the car. It was nothing more than this man tricked me and made reservations at one of the most romantic restaurants in Houston – Sambuca. It seemed the soft lighting complimented everything, from the decor to the beautiful people sauntering about; live music resonated throughout the restaurant and the menu was certainly pleasing to the palate.
Dinner was over, and we waited on the car to leave and head to the party. By this time it was about 10.30pm and certainly the movie plans had been botched. We drove around for awhile, finding a spot where we could have a post-meal cigarette. We alighted form the car and walked around, talking about the meal we just had and our plans for the new year. He said, “Do you feel for a drink?” I replied, “If you want. But aren’t we going to drink at the party?” He replied, “Let’s go have a drink before we go.” Thinking we were going to drive somewhere else, we walked towards the car, when he suddenly opened this blue door that looked to me to be an emergency exit for an apartment building. I was about to cuss him about opening the people dem door, when I looked inside and saw it was a legitimate institution, a bar called Marfreless (don’t worry, I don’t know how it’s pronounced either). We took a booth upstairs, ordered Riesling for me, Johnny Walker for him, and this is what happened next…
Him: Christina, you know I love you
Me: Yea baby, I love you too. Man, wine really makes me emotional.
(I close my eyes)
Him: You make me very happy.
Me: You make me happy too Kurt.
Him: I can’t live without you and want to spend the rest of my life with you
(I open my eyes and he’s on the floor, on one knee)
Me: Aaaaahmmm Kuuuuurrtt, what are you doing on the floor? Get up off the floor! What are you doing? Why are you doing this to me (crying now at this point)….. I hate you!
Him: Christina, will you marry me?
Me: (bawling now and hitting him on his shoulder as he’s kneeling before me)
Him: Ummmmmmm Christina?
(still crying) – it must have lasted about 10 minutes
Him: Christina?
Me: *nodding my head* – no words can come out
Him: (laughing at me now) Is that a yes. You really need to answer me, I’m on the floor.
Me: *still nodding* uughhppp *sniff* ugghgppp snif* Yes.
Him: What’s that? I can’t hear you (laughing at me more)
Me: (desperately trying to compose myself) *sigh* *sniffle sniffle* *sigh* Yea I’ll marry you…. (after a while) I hate you. I want to beat you up. Don’t you EVER do that to me again!
Me: (Laughing now) *sigh*
Him: (laughing) I love you babe.
Me: *sigh* *sniffle* I love you too. But don’t you ever do anything like that to me again.
So that was my night, and we went on to the party where it seems everyone there knew about my ‘news’ before I arrived. There were congratulations all around and hugs and well wishes aplenty. I was overwhelmed but still couldn’t help smiling from ear to ear. It was the happiest and most perfect night of my life.
And the ring? That was perfect too. It’s just what I wanted, though Kurt thinks it’s too small and wants to get me a bigger, ‘nicer’ one later. But I don’t need a new ring, this one suits me just fine. The size doesn’t reflect the amount of love I know we share. Frankly, I don’t think there’s a rock big enough to do that. And what makes it special too, is that Logan helped him to choose it.
Now fast-forward to February 29. Kurt got home at approximately 11.10pm. I hug him and say
Me: Baby, I want to ask you a very important question.
Him: Oh man, you and these questions. What is it now?
Me: Kurt, will you marry me?
Him: Ooooohhhh it’s that day today nuh? Well let’s see…
Then he pretends to cry and sniffle and mimic my previous New Year’s Eve performance. I’m sure he made me wait at least five minutes. Then he laughs and hugs me, kisses me on the lips and says,
Him: Yes, Christina I will marry you.
Me: Yay! I don’t have a ring for you though… but I have this blue elastic band.
Being the good sport that he is, he held out his hand, and I put the elastic band on his ring finger and that night we held hands, both wearing our ‘rings’ – OFFICIALLY ENGAGED!!!!
